Building the Future of EV Charging in Utah with DOE's SuperTruck Charge Award

The transition to zero-emission commercial transportation is accelerating, and Voltera is at the forefront of this shift. The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) recently awarded $22 million in funding to ASPIRE’s SUPERCHARGE project, a groundbreaking initiative that will establish Utah’s first dedicated charging hub for medium- and heavy-duty vehicles (MHDVs).

As a key partner in this initiative, Voltera will lead charging site development, installation, and operations, helping to create a scalable, replicable model for fleet electrification.

Backed by $44 million in total funding, including $15 million from industry and utility investments, SUPERCHARGE is set to redefine how commercial fleets access reliable, high-power charging infrastructure.

What Makes SUPERCHARGE a Game-Changer?

Electrifying heavy-duty fleets presents unique challenges. Charging infrastructure must be high-powered, cost-effective, and capable of supporting large-scale fleet operations. The SUPERCHARGE project is designed to tackle these challenges head-on by:

  • Developing a large-scale charging hub with up to 9 MW of concurrent charging and 12 MW of installed EV charger capacity.
  • Integrating smart energy and fleet management tools to optimize power usage and keep demand below 4.5 MW from the grid.
  • Demonstrating the viability of charging infrastructure-as-a-service, providing fleets with access to reliable infrastructure without the burden of massive upfront costs.
  • Setting a nationwide precedent for scalable, future-proof EV infrastructure.

Why This Matters for the Future of Fleet Electrification

Building high-power charging hubs is critical to ensuring the success of electric heavy-duty transportation. With projects like SUPERCHARGE, the industry is proving that scalable, cost-effective solutions are within reach.

As Brett Hauser, Chairman and CEO of Voltera, emphasized:

“The vision of this project highlights the innovation happening in Utah and underscores the importance of scalable, future-proof infrastructure to support the electrification of medium and heavy-duty vehicles. Today's announcement highlights how investments in key regional hubs like this one in Utah are driving the nationwide expansion of medium- and heavy-duty vehicle electrification, creating opportunities for adoption across the country.”

By delivering scalable charging infrastructure, Voltera and its partners are helping fleets transition to zero-emission operations without the typical barriers of cost, infrastructure delays, and grid limitations.

Looking Ahead: Scaling EV Charging Nationwide

With the SUPERCHARGE site in development, Voltera is committed to delivering scalable EV charging solutions that empower fleets to transition to zero-emission transportation seamlessly. As more high-power charging hubs come online, the industry will move closer to widespread commercial EV adoption, improving air quality, operational efficiency, and energy sustainability nationwide.
