Infrastructure Readiness Will Decide How Fast AV Ride-Hail Scales

‍

AV ride-hail is moving from testing to commercial service, with operators preparing to enter more cities and grow their fleets. The technology keeps advancing. The less visible question is whether the infrastructure will be ready when the vehicles are.

‍

That was the focus of Voltera CEO Frank Reig's conversationon Supplier Soundbytes, the Autology podcast from Mobility Global. Voltera develops, owns and operates charging and service depots for AV fleets, working with leading providers. Frank shared what it takes to get thosesites built and why planning needs to start now.

‍

A depot is more than a bank of chargers

Charging, cleaning and servicing a fleet takes suitable land, planning approval, a substantial amount of electricity and a location that works for operations across a city. Securing all of that can take years.

‍

Power and permitting set the pace

Power availability and permitting are among the biggest obstacles. Operators have to work through local regulations, secure multiple permits and coordinate with utilities to get the electrical capacity they need at a cost that makes commercial sense. Construction itself may take only four to six months, whereas bringing a site from site selection to full operations can take up to 24 months.

‍

Scale means a network, not a single site

Supporting thousands of vehicles in a major city takes acoordinated network of depots. Planning has to look beyond individual locationsto how the whole network supports efficient operations and a sustainable business model.

‍

Start planning today

With lead times measured in years, operators targeting expansion in 2030 and beyond need to plan and invest in infrastructure now. Frank's key takeaway: growth depends on infrastructure being ready when fleets are ready to scale.
